| UK SUSTAINABLE BIO-DIESEL ALLIANCE |
 |
ConvertGreen is the founding member and Chair of the UK Sustainable Bi-odiesel Alliance (UKSBA), formed in 2009 to lobby Government against plans to remove the tax differential for bio-fuels, so increasing the price to commercially non-viable levels for our customers. This substantial increase in the price of bio-fuel relative to mineral diesel, would have forced our customers to return to the use of fossil-based fuels and resulted in many bio-diesel producers going out of business.
Representing some 30 biodiesel producers from across the UK, the UKSBA’s successful campaign showed Government the contribution the bio-diesel from waste sector was making to carbon reduction, waste management and the development of vital green skills for the low carbon economy. It also revealed the difference between unsustainable bio-fuels which create land-use change and fully sustainable fuels created from waste products.
In December 2009, the Government announced that the UKSBA had won its case and the tax differential for bio-diesel produced from used cooking oil (UCO) was retained for a further two years.
The results were dramatic. Bio-diesel from UCO now accounts for a third of the bio-fuel used on UK roads, delivering an 83% greenhouse gas saving versus fossil fuels. This has enabled the Government to exceed its greenhouse gas savings target in road transport by 5% and saved over 75 million litres (30 olympic sized swimming pools) of cooking oil from going down our drains or in to landfill.
As founder of the SOS Biodiesel! Campaign, the UKSBA continues to lobby Government on support for the sector going forward and is now recognised as a key stakeholder, invited to a number of industry/Government groups to determine renewable energy policy and law.
This seat at the table provides Convert2Green with a unique insight in to the direction of travel for the sector and vital information for the development of our customers’ products and services.
