| Convert2Green and Cygnet Foods Runner Up in Food Northwest Award for Environmental Sustainability |
June 2009
Convert2Green with Warrington food company, Cygnet Foods, were runners up in the 2009 Food Northwest Award for Environmental Sustainability.
Cygnet Foods, which supplies food and catering services to more than 30,000 people each day, powers its fleet of school meal vehicles with its own recycled cooking oil.
Waste cooking oil from Cygnet Foods is collected by Convert2Green and turned into bio fuel, which is then used to power Cygnet’s fleet of vehicles and to drive a combined heat and power system at Cygnet’s central food production unit in Nottingham. This system allows Cygnet to provide surplus electricity to the national grid, giving it the opportunity to buy renewable power for remote sites.
Cygnet has not only made an 85% carbon saving against the use of mineral diesel, but has also been able to fix their power costs for 5 years.
