CASE STUDY - OLDHAM MBC
CHADDERTON WELLBEING CENTRE |
 |
A new leisure and community facility in Oldham, which is powered by a Convert2Green combined heat and power (CHP) generating system, has received national recognition by being awarded the Sustainability Award at the national LIFT Awards. The same facility has also won the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors’ (RICs) North West Sustainability Award.
Chadderton Wellbeing Centre is a LIFT (Local Improvement Finance Trust) development for Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council (MBC). It houses a 25m swimming pool, gym, dance studio, library, cafe and community meeting rooms all under one roof in a brand new, purpose built facility.
Oldham MBC has significant targets for carbon reduction and for the energy performance of all its new buildings. Sustainability was a major consideration throughout the design process and a Convert2Green generating system was incorporated in to the design of the building in order to deliver substantial carbon savings and a reduced impact on the environment.
The awards have been given in recognition of the outstanding sustainable features that have been embedded in the design, construction and operation of the building and the resulting benefits in terms of carbon savings.
Chief amongst these features is the innovative Convert2Green generating system, which uses a bio-fuel based 100% on waste cooking oil to provide heat and power to the building. In addition, surplus power can be exported to the National Grid, allowing even greater off-setting of emissions.
Convert2Green collects waste cooking oil from commercial and public sector buildings, such as schools within the Oldham area, to be reused as a bio-fuel source to help power this public building.
These features have resulted in an ‘A’ rated energy performance certificate, one of the highest ratings available. It demonstrates how the integration of architectural design and the Convert2Green technologies are resulting in a 90% carbon reduction compared to conventional mains supply power and heat. This delivers a reduction in the building’s carbon emissions of approximately 450,000 kg per year.
Convert2Green bio-fuel generating systems have also been installed in the new NHS Oldham Integrated Care Centre and in the NHS Royton Health and Wellbeing Centre. |
